Except at f2.8 (and the zoom is excellent there too, except near minimum
focus near the long end of its range near f2.8 [one condition...;-]), it
would generally be hard to tell them apart in terms of image quality - I
would choose based on use (I chose the zoom, since I needed the fast FL
change ability for some types of commercial work I do - a friend chose
the 105M and 180 for their lighter-weight/smaller size [and for the macro capability]). BTW, the 180 AF Nikkor is excellent on tubes..., and the 105
AF is a bit difficult to use near infinity-focus... If you can stay around
f11 and if macro is not a primary need, I would consider the 24-120 + 180
combination, adding a couple of short tubes for the 180 for occasional
moderate-magnification macro work (AF is generally not used in macro, anyway...).
Hope This Helps
