Actually, there were two versions, but the very early f6.3 was unlikely
to be the one referred to in the original post... The f11 version (MUCH
more manageable weight and size...;-) I have seen as low as $450 or so,
though I was not overly impressed with the one I (briefly) owned. The
older-version Nikkor 500mm f8 mirror + TC 14/14B performed much better
than either the Nikkor or the Russian 1000mm I tried (though it is 700mm
vs. 1000mm...;-) The older-style 500mm mirror Nikkor + TC200 performed
about as well as the 1000mm f11 that I tried, though it was about a stop
slower... (the photo of the sailboat and windsurfer crossing paths on my
web page ["commercial", then "travel brochure", then "Cayuga Lake" {second photo}] was shot with the 500 + 2X hand-held, and has been used in large full-page reproductions [though I would not call it REALLY sharp...;-])
